nvidia is really, really good compared to ati when it comes to drivers,
a friend of mine was very happy when ati finally released the graphic
drivers for Linux AMD64, but when he found out that the ati drivers was
slower than the ones in xorg he wasn't that happy any more...

I have never had this problem with the nvidia drivers. I use a old
version, so maybe it will work if you downgrade to 6629.
