Overlay basically means sending the video directly to the card, rather than going through X11.  If a screen capture of the MPlayer window only shows solid green/blue, it's using an overlay.

The common overlay -vo's mplayer uses are "xv", and *vidix, so if "-vo xv" works, you're using an overlay.
