[MPlayer-users] How to find out length of filename

Hello!
I am fairly new here an i have got two simple questions:

How can i find out the file length of a mediafile (mp3, avi, mpeg, etc..)?
How can i check if the file is playable or not?

The mplayer is script "driven", so i can not just open a file and see if it
works.
So this all should be done in a shell without X, and the result should
ideally be grep-able.

Thanks in advance for any ideas/tips/hints/solutions!
