[MPlayer-users] How to encode the middle part of a file?

Hi,

I'm trying to encode a TV show (MPEG2), but I can't work out how to get 
mencoder to skip the ads at the start of the file.  I thought the "-ss" 
option would do the job because it works with mplayer, but it only causes 
mencoder to segfault (latest CVS as of a few minutes ago.)

I've read a few posts saying that mencoder can't do this - is that true?  If 
so, what other tools do you use to perform this function?
