The movie may be filmed at 1.85 or 2.35, but the aspect on the DVD video
stream can be only 16/9 or 4/3. If the movie is filmed at a different
aspect, you will have black bars in the video stream on the DVD.
PAL DVDs will be superior in resolution to NTSC DVDs no matter what
aspect the movie is filmed in. On an NTSC DVD, a cinescope movie
(2.35:1) has 363 useful lines vertical resolution (854/2.35) in addition
to 117 lines of black, making 480 lines. A PAL DVD would have 435 lines
(1024/2.35) in addition to 141 lines of black, making 576 total lines.
Cheers,
Jason.
