[MPlayer-users] Mplayer can't play long file with -(force)idx, but can from stdin

Yesterday, while piping a roughly 30GB huffyuv avi to 
mpeg2enc via -vo yuv4mpeg, I got a "seek error" or
something like that while attempting to play the
file directly.  I had to pipe the file into mplayer,
for example:

  cat real.big.avi | mplayer - ... -vo yuv4mpeg

The index went OK and playback went fine up till the
point where it crashed.

This was using a relatively recent mplayer beta (athlon) 
rpm.  Is this a known bug and/or known to be fixed?

If you want more details, I should be able to reproduce
the error easily.
