It has nothing to do with the encoding of the signal, it has everything
to do with the noise in the signal.  If you are getting your TV over
satellite, digital, or any other method that doesn't tend to introduce
noice, then be happy.

However, many of us are recording TV signals that come over the air,
through cable, etc., and have plenty of noise in the signal to contend
with.
