No response necessary.
For once, the reply was not RTFM rather it appears that
mencoder-686_1.0-pre2.0.0 for Debian may have a bug. Downgrading to
package mencoer-686_1%3a0.90sarge0.2_i386.deb has solved the problem.
All is well.
