That's because the xv output plugin resizes the picture according to the 
aspect ratio, so if you use -vo x11 you'll have to resize the picture 
manually.  See the -vop scale option in the manpage.  Be warned though, this 
will use quite a bit of CPU too (it's similar in function to the zoom option, 
it just resizes the X and Y dimensions unevenly to change the aspect ratio.)
