Adam,
As I said in my original post, I had just upgraded Gnome to 2.4.  But
your suggestion is in the right direction.  Cameron pointed out the same
problem, and suggested updating metacity (2.6.2 now), and for the one
test video that I tried, it worked.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions.  If it turns up again, maybe I'll try
a different wm.
