I don't record with mencoder (but with streamer) but maybe this helps you:
- Try different quality settings. In streamer my computer keeps up well
  with 90% quality, using 60-70% of CPU time, but with 95% quality it's
  too slow.
- What is the difference between MJPEG and JPEG? With streamer,
  MJPEG is *much* slower than JPEG. Can this be chosen in mencoder?
