[MPlayer-users] mplayer starts, then goes black

i am a Mplayer newbie. i can watch most clips no worries.
When I play a file sometimes it starts playing and after a few seconds the 
screen goes black. This happens at varying points during the clip. At the 
moment it is a 1.5MB .wmv file I am having the problem with.
Could it be a memory/buffer problem?
Debian stable 3.0, 350MHz AMDK6-2, 192MB RAM, no sound card.
