IMHO it should work without any problems? - i don't own a card that support 
-vo mpegpes but with my -vo dxr3 mplayer reencodes the stuff on the fly so it 
works fine ... so just give it a try with the same -vo with an avi xvid asf 
blabla  whatever ...
