Mencoder is capable (see the documentation!), of reencoding mpeg2 videos. However, dvdshrink does something different entirely; instead of decoding and then encoding the video, it takes the mpeg2 stream and recompresses only certain parts of it. Mencoder is unable to (and presumably will never be able to) do this. Fortunately, there are now a couple of linux programs that can perform this operation, such as lverequant from the lve project ( http://lvempeg.sourceforge.net/ ). However, you won't be able to keep the layout of the dvd, and the quality is probably worse than with dvdshrink, so you might be best of trying to use Wine or finding a Windows computer at the moment.
