As far as I know, you can't play rtsp:// urls without the "live.com
streaming media" libraries. (someone correct me if I'm wrong)

Have you installed them? If so, what version?

If mplayer tries to play rtsp:// when the live.com libraries aren't
installed, I suppose that's probably a bug.

If you do have the live.com stuff installed and it still doesn't work,
can you use iptraf or tcpdump or some such program to determine if
mplayer is doing any network communication?
