[MPlayer-users] Creating a new gui

Can anyone give me some pointers on creating a new gui for mplayer. My 
goal is create a home theater gui frontend for mplayer.

1) how easy is it to compile the gui into mplayer? What should i know 
before hand?

2) is the an api, that will list all the calls that i may need to make, 
such as current time...length of media..ffwd, rew...stuff like that?
