$ ./configure --cc=gcc-3.1
Detected operating system: Linux
Detected host architecture: i386
Checking for gcc-3.1 version ... 3.1, ok

(this is the gcc-3.1 (3.1-2) package from Debian unstable)

What is your output of "gcc-3.1 -v"?
