I came to the same conclusion using tcpdump - when connecting from Media
Player, the only connection was to port 1755. No attempt to connect to
port 80 at all. And the connection is established, and the content is
streamed just fine. The server isn't busy or overloaded - I can
demonstrate that from windows/mediaplayer while simulatenously failing
to connect from linux/mplayer. There's definitely something not quite
working.
My conclusion is that the mms protocol implementation is somehow
incomplete in mplayer.
I don't know what's going on; I'm just trying to help.
