You should try xvid CVS as the tgz downloadable version has been
reported not to work with mplayer  (it's still an experimental support).

For MPlayer configure, it should be:
  --with-xvidcore=./xvid-21_01_02/core/build/generic/libcore.a
                  ~~                                ~~~~~~~~~~

BUT you should really consider adding an absolute path as a relative one
may not be well supported.
