What ao device are you using? Try 'mplayer -ao help' and try some of the
ones
listed (alsa9, arts, sdl, and oss are likely candidates).
Also, you can check if you have access to /dev/dsp by typing 'echo >
/dev/dsp'.
That shouldn't do anything, but you'll get an access denied message if
you don't
have permissions..
If you don't have any luck, please re-post and show the entire output of
mplayer your_movie.file
