As for the error message, I guess for now it is enough to print some
error, even if it is in english.

MPlayer doesn't link to mp3lame, it's libavcodecs that link to it. And
mplayer (usually) link libavcodecs statically.

Maybe it is good idea to use mp3lame only directly or only through
lavc (That's for mencoder of course, but mplayer/mencoder link to same
libavcodecs.a).
