  I really looked at it the first time you posted it.
  Maybe I didn't make it clear though...

  I really don't like the patch, it adds a big hack.
Not that there are no other hacks in mplayer, but the
idea is to get rid of them. Your solution even if now
working tends to cause problems in future.

  So please let me try to fix it correctly; I'll commit
something to stop the crashes on about monday night, as
I'll continue to be away for the weekend.
