The problem is that AVI files can have duplicate frames by storing a
0-byte frame in the AVI file. These all get lost when you dump the
video out, so A/V sync will be broken. Of course even if they did get
kept, your gop structure would be wrong so the VCD wouldn't be
compliant. Basically mencoder's a/v sync design isn't meant for making
DVD/VCD...
