Try loading em8300 with activate_loopback=1, this usually fixes the problem 
where the monitor is turned off or goes black.

If you have not configured overlay before you must first run autocal, then run 
mplayer without overlay and use dxr3view to change settings so that video is 
inside the dxr3view window. I will try to improve autocal in the future so it 
finds better settings, at the moment I always had to calibrate the window 
with dxr3view.
If I'm not able to fix this I thought I could add some stuff to mplayers gui 
to tune the dxr3 overlay, but this is not something I would do now so we can 
discuss this some other time.
