BTW, imho there's an annoying behaviour in configure at least for newcomers.
If you haven't got xanim installed before you run ./configure, xanim codecs
support won't be compiled in. If you install xanim after compilation you
must recompile/reinstall mplayer to use xanim codecs. So, if a user doesn't
know EXACTLY what features mplayer has, then (s)he will forced to recompile
mplayer each time when (s)he finds out that (s)he can use additional features
as well ... Maybe ./configure should write out warnings like:

'Support of xanim codecs was not compiled in. Please install xanim if you
 want to use them, then rerun ./configure before starting compilation'
